Frinton is a sea side course linkish

I'd been looking forward to playing at Frinton Golf Club for many years. It's a step up from Clacton and does not seem to be as overplayed as Clacton tends to be in the summer.

The deal we had as a society was £46 with a meal, which I thought was ok. The buggy was £30 pounds if I remember rightly. The course is situated a stone's throw from the beach, some of the views are really good. This course is very flat. Of course there's is a prevailing wind, which there always is at seaside courses when the tide changes.

With a slope rating of 125, it's not what I'd call a tough course, but you really need to know where you are going to score well. The course measures in at a little under 6,000 yards (off the yellows) so not short by any means. The fairways are generous, and in good order, but the greens a tad slow.

The big disappointment for me was the ditches, there are quite a few, not easy to spot but bloody easy to find. Laying up for them is an art!

The Clubhouse is very traditional, and the staff were friendly and accommodating and the food was good.

It's a long drive, but on a nice day can be picturesque.

I'd like to have scored it higher than I have, but it sort of fell short in some respects. Maybe I expected too much?

I will play it again....and maybe I'll be better at laying up for those ditches!

Great course but club is stuck in 1920's...

Frinton Golf Club on the Essex east coast has been on my list of golf courses to play since I was a kid. However, back then they would not have entertained a young interloper like me, but 35 years later due to an invitation via a mate's golf society, I stepped onto the first tee of this well-known course with great anticipation.

Now I'll start by saying this is a superbly maintained golf course! Beautiful fairways (albeit a bit bumpy in places - see below), well-manicured greens, and pleasing vistas of the beach huts and expansive skies above. Completely flat, this is an easy course to walk but not so easy to navigate - why do clubs not put up signage for the visiting golfer?

Not a true Links course, the course was built on marshland and despite its flat terrain, driving a buggy is like taking on the mogul fields of Switzerland for the afternoon, as such, I'd have rather walked.

The food in the clubhouse was good, and all the bar staff were pleasant and friendly but I somehow I left thinking, nice day, great course but I won't be rushing back.

Why? Well, I just didn't feel welcome...

The Pro shop was disinterested in my asking about the course, and even more disinterested in knowing about The Social Golfer, which with a good review could encourage more visitors to your club.

In addition, having to hire a buggy (my mate is a disabled golfer, so we have to) I was appalled at the £30 fee. On what planet are these people on? Surely there could be a concession for disability.

However, the most irritating thing is we left a rangefinder in the buggy by mistake.

When my pal called the club the next day and asked if it could be returned via post (all paid for of course), he was told no, you'll have to drive two hours round trip to come and get it.

Clearly, this club has been spoiled by its local members' loyalty but as we enter a second year of a 'Cost of Living' crisis, this golf club needs to move out of the 1920s and into the 2020s!

Windy links experience...

You can't call yourself a real golfer until you have played a links course. At Frinton Golf Club, after the first 3 holes, you encounter the full wind-blown links course experience, playing beside the sea with almost no trees.

Although it appears flat there are many gently rippling surfaces of springy well-established turf.

If you find your ball with an uphill or downhill lie in these yard-wide ripples you may need to manufacture some tricky shots.

These Ripples also cause some random bounces. Bad shots are punished by the wind blowing balls into the long grass that is necessary to define the layout of each hole.

There are an average number of ditches and bunkers.

Pitch-and-run is the order of the day because of the hard surfaces, to avoid the wind and flukey bounces.

It's original old-style golf at its best. Go on, give it a try!
