Average course

Course is reasonable with a few good and challenging holes but not enough for my liking. Very few trees and quite open with a non-existent rough making bad shots playable.

If your are new to golf or want a forgiving course then this is a good one to play.

Course has improved since last round 2 years ago

Very basic facilities, no clubhouse or catering. Well drained chalkland course, biggest problem used to be poor maintenance of greens, however very pleasing to see big improvement in quality of greens maintenance

Good Links Style Course - Great Winter Course

Clandon Golf Course offers no frills golf, I played in December and paid £27, slightly over priced given the lack of facilities, however the course was good.

The clubhouse is a portacabin, with one toilet, a canvassed area provides hot food, no changing facilities are provided, and there is no pro shop or practice facilities. The location is also odd, being located opposite the Guildford Park and Ride, however the course does have it’s own free parking. If you are able to look beyond the negatives above, a good golf course awaits.

The course is not long measuring 5,672yds from the yellow tees, and the opening hole is a gentle opener, a 319yd straight forward par 4. The course is very open and is a links style course, the rough was not punishing and there are wide fairways.

This is a great winter course and is as dry as Southern Valley (SV) in winter, and between the two courses I think Clandon has the slight edge over SV in terms of course design and interest, it’s a shame there are not better facilities at this course.

The tee boxes were a bit fluffy for my liking, however the fairways, greens and bunkers were all goodfor this time of the year. The course is very exposed to wind and when we played, there was a significant amount of wind to test your game. I also liked the undulations of the greens, and the contouring of the course.

There are some nice holes on this course, and the most memorable were the Par 5 13th, which is probably one of the hardest holes on the course, despite being a SI 5, and the 14th Par 3 is a good test played from an elevated tee to a green approx 80-100ft below.

I would like to play this course in summer, as I would imagine there would be a lot more run from the fairways and I expect the greens could be super tricky in dryer conditions.

Would I play here again? Yes, and particularly if I was looking for a dry course to play in winter.

Definitely worth a look if you are in the area.

Surprisingly Good

I wasn't sure what to expect at Clandon Golf as upon arrival the portacabin isn't great but everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The course offers nice wide fairways so no matter how wayward your drive it's easy to find your ball. The greens looked terrible but played true! The back nine has some terrific holes which need to be played a second time to get right. Drains very well so a good winter course.

An excellent winter pay & play course

Clandon GC is a proprietary pay and pay course in Clandon, near Guildford, Surrey. It is located immediately behind a Park & Ride bus station.

The course is described as a parkland style course but the course is very akin to an inland links style course in places!

The course opened as an 18 hole course in 2010. The front 9 was built in 2008 and the back 9 in 2009. The design of the course is accredited to European Golf Design, a partnership of the European Tour and IMG Design. No named individual designer is identified though the design company has a celebrated portfolio of completed courses!

The course is a short par 69 at only 5,672 yards off the Yellow tees! There are 5 par 3s, 11 par 4s and 2 par 5s.

The course is built on a chalk base so all round playability is claimed. I/we played it in mid December and despite recent rains, the fairways, banks, bunkers and greens were in relatively 'dry' conditions. Very playable!

The rough areas were cut to make it easier to locate and play wayward drives/shots!

The greens were firm, generally large and undulating and difficult to read pace and line, as evidenced by 4 triple putts on the day! A few greens were patchy and perhaps infected but nevertheless played well!

Bunkers are numerous, large, deep and well sanded.

The standard weekday green fee is £18. However, an over 60s rate of £13 is available on Thursdays! An excellent vfm option for us vets!

The course is administered from a port-a-cabin type arrangement. Adjacent to this is a basic kitchen/dining area. Hot food was not scheduled to be available on Mondays, but due to a society booking the kitchen was open for hot food. I had a nice pre-game toasted fried egg sandwich! Catering availability finishes at about 13.30pm. There is however a coffee/tea machine and sandwiches and confectionery available.

I first played the course a couple of times in 2012 but hadn't played it since largely due to a 'prejudice' about the lack of 'proper' facilities; particularly the absence of decent post game refreshment options. There is no alcohol licence held so no beers available! We finished in time top have a post game coffee but nothing else!

Back in 2012 I though the general design/layout of the course was good, with many challenging holes, risk/reward choices to make and 5 lovely par 3s. My concern was always that I couldn't be certain, based on a perception of lower utilisation/revenues, that the course maintenance would be poorer. However, on this occasion my previously held view was unjustified. The course was infinitely in better playing condition throughout than many pay and pay and members courses I've recently played.

While I generally look to play 'new' green fee courses during the winter months outside of my Cherry Lodge play, I'd have no reservations about playing here again on an ad-hoc basis, especially on the Thursdays seniors rate.

Good winter course.

Cheap round £25.00 for a Sunday with a 9.30am tee time
In current weather conditions this course is worth a visit.
Dry fairways and greens. No mud !

No clubhouse , just a porta-cabin ,apparently they have planning permission to build one

Trade off

I can't really score this to improve the rating, as the fairways and tee boxes hadn't really improved since my visit here 4 years previous. But the greens did seem a bit better, and were in most cases quite firm and fast. However, some were still suffering from patches of moss growth.
I think it's really a course in the winter where you would trade off quality, for the chance to get some golf on a course where you'll still get some run, and your ball won't plug on virtually every shot, as has been the case on the last two courses I have played following the recent heavy rains.
No doubt helped by it's higher geographical location, and the chalk base, it was holding up really well, and does have a few really interesting holes, and some great views.
Pity it still hasn't had any investment, and there is only still a portakabin, but the service was friendly, and there was tea/coffee/rolls and a loo available.
We were only charged £20.00, I think I would begrudge paying more, but overall we were able to play a round of golf here, whereas most other local courses were in quite saturated conditions and bordering on being unplayable.
As another of our party has said it will likely be sold off for re-development, I can't see it getting any better, so would probably only go back to take advantage of the drier conditions in similar winter circumstances.

Great for winter play...

Clandon which I discovered a few years was a great course which unfortunately went downhill a bit if you read some previous reviews.

I wanted to find out for myself the condition in 2016 and I must say I was nicely surprised by the quality of the fairways and the greens were very decent. One or two has a little moss, the downside was that pitch marks were not repaired. What sort of golfer would do that? Shame on you, if you play golf you should know to respect such beautiful places.

The bunkers were excellent due to their specific construction, I only visited one.

A pleasant round in a 4 balls despite a little rain on 8th/9th hole, a lot of ferocious wind. The 13th, 14th, 15th are the most challenging and enjoyable.

The welcome is warm even if in a portacabin. Hot food & beverage available and extremely reasonable, and one can have the after golf drink in a delightful local pub, The Onslow Arms in West Clandon with a 20% discount.

The car park can be a little tricky to find and mud can play havoc when you drive in or get out, some of us had a very unfortunate experience but a happy ending...... Won't mention names.

A great day, in a lovely environment and very pleasant company. By the way, we "the girls" won our Matchplay against "the boys" by a vast margin..... Golf lessons must be playing off...

Will return sooner than later as I believe the site is on the list for future development.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU PLAY @ CLADON GC, follow directions for Merrow Park & Ride. The golf club parking is just behind the Park & Ride, tricky to find if you don't know...

Hmmm...

It's only the second time I've played here, but since my first visit the general condition has gone downhill. The course itself is fairly open, although there are some interesting holes from 13 to 15.

When I played it in the summer a couple of years ago I thought the greens and fairways were in decent condition. However, playing it today both were in a very sorry state. The greens especially looked in a bad way with lots of moss.

There's only a portacabin to welcome you, so you'll need to find somewhere else to get a drink after your round.

Last time I enjoyed playing here, this time I didn't, so I'm hoping that it will improve with the weather.

In need of attention, but I still like the course because.....

Clandon Golf could be a superb Pay & Play because of its location on the chalky Surrey hills if more attention & money were spent, as the fairways and greens showed a little neglect. The sand bunkers are superb, full of white soft sand, very well drained and nice rakes.

The course is fairly open, Links type, with tall trees well placed on the fairways giving guidance as to where/not where to send the ball, the rough is flourishing & if the ball ends up there, you wont find it... just colourful wild flowers, nettles and thisles & more!

The 13th, 14th and 15th should get a mention as they are great holes: 13th PAR 5 (528 yards) sharp dogleg right, uphill, bordered by trees OOB, a quarry to deal with to reach the green on the same side or if you take the long route a row of small trees/bushes await for your ball. The 14th, a gorgeous downhill PAR 3 (145 yrds), quarry on the left and large well placed sand bunkers to protect it. The 15th, PAR 4 (399 yrds) an amazing uphill Tee Shot over a very deep quarry, slope to another quarry on the left awaiting errant balls.

Uphill climb with guiding post to a downhill green with lots of trees, bushes on one side, craters before the green to make it a little even more challenging. Index 1.... and Matthew S. parred it. Great stuff, very impressed.

The 17th short PAR 4 (287 yrds)although indexed at 15 is worth mentioning as it needs careful Tee shot between trees, the green is well guarded by 7 bunkers. So if you want Par or Birdie, work at it. The drainage is superb: despite the recent deluges, there is no water evidence whatsoever, bone dry on fairways and bunkers...

Yes the GREENS were in a poor state, even my new Putter was not impressed... A real shame because the shapes and undulations could make them 1st class. When I played there for the 1st time back in February 2012, the greens were fast & in good condition.

The facilities are very basic but one can have an enjoyable round, as the 3 of us did today. Grey skies but no rain worth mentioning (some Pars & Birdies between us). We had a social chat drinking tea outside the Clubhouse (Portacabin) seating on brand new garden chairs & matching tables in black. That felt quite "posh", but the local Pub down the road (Onslow Arms) will offer you a 20 per cent discount on food/drinks on production of your stamped/dated scorecard.(Food/service are excellent).

Friendly reception & NOW comfortable seating area on large white sofas in Portacabin. Great value on a Monday: £15.00 for the round.

I shall return as some great golf can be had on what could truly be a superb golf course.

THE END...

Woolly greens and weedy fairways but a well drained and therefore dry course

Echo some of the reviews earlier, the greens very woolly and therefore slow and untrue, especially near the pins, Fairways were weedy in many places. There are some interesting (nice) holes especially around the quarry, but let down by the poor state of the fairways and greens. This course would be so much better with a little more attention. HOWEVER, this course drains unbelievably well. We played immediately following a sustained period of wet weather around the country, floods etc, and this course was bone dry. It is built on chalk, hence the quarry. The bunkers were well filled and raked with no standing water either. Therefore despite the condition of the fairways and greens, was a pleasure to play without getting soaked from the feet up, with some great views over the surrey hills. Worth £15.

Oh dear oh dear!

Well apart from the guy in the portacabin being friendly, there isn't much worthwhile about this course. Greens - grass too long, slow and unresponsive; Fairways - covered in patches of weed and merge into rough in places. Tee off places covered in broken tees. Could do with some food/drink facilities and better ground staff....and maybe a tree/bush/shrub or two...

For £25.00 pounds I would not recommend it. If it was £15.00 or accepted 2 for 1 vouchers, I would consider it...especially as its empty to get round at a good pace.

In need of a lot more investment

Positive points, good mix of holes, some quite challenging, bunkers had good amount of sand in them. Potential to be quite good. Negative points, no club house, no practice facilities. Over priced for the shabby state of the tee boxes, fairways and wooley greens, considering the choice of other local courses for the same or one or two pounds more. Would not go back unless hear on the grapevine it has greatly improved with additional investment.

new course but!!!!!!!!

When you arrive its just a portakabin,i know they have applied for planning but there could be plans etc to show what they are doing.Coffee is £1 and you only get half a cup.No practice area or putting green. So the course,Tee boxes poor, not cleaned up,untidy uneven long grass.Fairways poor, hard to see when you are on or off.
Greens, they are slow, not really maintained that well although they do run true.
After all that the layout is good for a new course, the back nine is much more interesting. It could be a good course, but it needs some tender loving care to entice people to spend there £25 at the weekend.
Would i go back, not sure it would have to have some decent reviews before.

Recently open Links type course ....

The 18 holes golf course has been recently completed, pay & play, no clubhouse yet but you get a 20 per cent discount on Food/drinks in a charming Country Pub just down the Road.

Superb Links type , very open fairways, tantalising slopes, huge undalating greens, very fast. Very well drained bunkers, plenty of the right sand... well sign posted, properly built paths, surrounded by ancient woodland on 2 sides, open view of Surrey on the others, Guildford somewhere in the background/foreground... National Trust property in the vicinity.

The course is built on chalky ground, so very well drained.

Hole 14 is the most impressive. You Tee off over a large chalk quarry, uphill drive and if you veer or bounce to the left, you end up in another huge out of bound quary, downhill hazards and well placed bunkers await for you.....

The previous hole (13th)well worth mentioning, is a very deceiving Par 3, raised Tee, big quarry on the left, someone's back garden on the right and 2 big sand bunkers in front of the large green....

Uncrowded as new and not known enough and facilities non existent as yet but in the pipeline.

Great value on a Monday and on a Wednesday roll up open to anyone of a certain age I believe...

If you like uncrowded, Links type, do try when in that part of Surrey (course situated near the Park & Ride for Guildford Town)

Uncrowded, and will grow on you to get the putts.
Must be fantastic in the summer. Will return to better my score...

Will be a goodie!

Bordering on Guildford Golf Course, this is a new pay-and-play parkland course. Only the front 9 are available to play at present, but this shouldn't stop you from visiting. Admittedy, the morning I played was a perfect one, but there are some very nice holes. The 600-yard par 5 6th is good, though my favourite is the tee shot on the 8th ... putting the ball through the middle of the fairway guardians (trees) is a very satisfying sight!

Can't wait for the back 9 to open next year.
